Hemp

Hemp was among the first plants to be harvested for its usable fibre.  Although it has many commercial applications, hemp seed oil has a variety of health benefits, especially as an anti-inflammatory.  Hemp seeds are eaten raw, sprout powder, ground into meal, used for baking, and even taken ask liquid (hemp milk and beer).  Leaves of the hemp plant can be used in salads or pressed into juice; however, they are not quite as nutritious as the seeds. 

Hemp contains 9 different amino acids and it is high in both protein and fibre.  Its oil is used for its anti-aging properties. 

Hemp seed oil is used to treat MS, osteoporosis, and psoriasis.  Further, is has applications as an effective moisturizer, now seen throughout many commercial beauty products. 

Be mindful that hemp seed oil is susceptible to oxidation and becoming rancid.  To prevent the oil going off, avoid heat and light.

%20researchers%20in%20this%20field%20for%20upcoming%20publications.%5CnSELECTION%20CRITERIA%3A%20Randomized%20controlled%20trials%20comparing%20any%20form%20of%20cannabis%20or%20its%20cannabinoid%20derivatives%20%28natural%20or%20synthetic%29%20to%20placebo%20or%20an%20active%20therapy%20for%20adults%20with%20Crohn%26%23039%3Bs%20disease%20were%20included.%5CnDATA%20COLLECTION%20AND%20ANALYSIS%3A%20Two%20authors%20independently%20screened%20search%20results%2C%20extracted%20data%20and%20assessed%20bias%20using%20the%20Cochrane%20risk%20of%20bias%20tool.%20The%20primary%20outcomes%20were%20clinical%20remission%20and%20relapse.%20Remission%20is%20commonly%20defined%20as%20a%20Crohn%26%23039%3Bs%20disease%20activity%20index%20%28CDAI%29%20of%20%26lt%3B%20150.%20Relapse%20is%20defined%20as%20a%20CDAI%20%26gt%3B%20150.%20Secondary%20outcomes%20included%20clinical%20response%2C%20endoscopic%20remission%2C%20endoscopic%20improvement%2C%20histological%20improvement%2C%20quality%20of%20life%2C%20C-reactive%20protein%20%28CRP%29%20and%20fecal%20calprotectin%20measurements%2C%20adverse%20events%20%28AEs%29%2C%20serious%20AEs%2C%20withdrawal%20due%20to%20AEs%2C%20and%20cannabis%20dependence%20and%20withdrawal%20effects.%20We%20calculated%20the%20risk%20ratio%20%28RR%29%20and%20corresponding%2095%25%20confidence%20interval%20%2895%25%20CI%29%20for%20dichotomous%20outcomes.%20For%20continuous%20outcomes%2C%20we%20calculated%20the%20mean%20difference%20%28MD%29%20and%2095%25%20CI.%20Data%20were%20combined%20for%20analysis%20when%20the%20interventions%2C%20patient%20groups%20and%20outcomes%20were%20sufficiently%20similar%20%28determined%20by%20consensus%29.%20Data%20were%20analyzed%20on%20an%20intention-to-treat%20basis%20and%20the%20overall%20certainty%20of%20the%20evidence%20supporting%20the%20outcomes%20was%20evaluated%20using%20the%20GRADE%20criteria.%5CnMAIN%20RESULTS%3A%20Three%20studies%20%2893%20participants%29%20that%20assessed%20cannabis%20in%20people%20with%20active%20CD%20met%20the%20inclusion%20criteria.%20One%20ongoing%20study%20was%20also%20identified.%20Participants%20in%20two%20of%20the%20studies%20were%20adults%20with%20active%20Crohn%26%23039%3Bs%20disease%20who%20had%20failed%20at%20least%20one%20medical%20treatment.%20The%20inclusion%20criteria%20for%20the%20third%20study%20were%20unclear.%20No%20studies%20that%20assessed%20cannabis%20therapy%20in%20quiescent%20CD%20were%20identified.%20The%20studies%20were%20not%20pooled%20due%20to%20differences%20in%20the%20interventional%20drug.One%20small%20study%20%28N%20%3D%2021%29%20compared%20eight%20weeks%20of%20treatment%20with%20cannabis%20cigarettes%20containing%20115%20mg%20of%20D9-tetrahydrocannabinol%20%28THC%29%20to%20placebo%20cigarettes%20containing%20cannabis%20with%20the%20THC%20removed%20in%20participants%20with%20active%20CD.%20This%20study%20was%20rated%20as%20high%20risk%20of%20bias%20for%20blinding%20and%20other%20bias%20%28cannabis%20participants%20were%20older%20than%20placebo%29.%20The%20effects%20of%20cannabis%20on%20clinical%20remission%20were%20unclear.%20Forty-five%20per%20cent%20%285%5C%2F11%29%20of%20the%20cannabis%20group%20achieved%20clinical%20remission%20compared%20with%2010%25%20%281%5C%2F10%29%20of%20the%20placebo%20group%20%28RR%204.55%2C%2095%25%20CI%200.63%20to%2032.56%3B%20very%20low%20certainty%20evidence%29.%20A%20difference%20was%20observed%20in%20clinical%20response%20%28decrease%20in%20CDAI%20score%20of%20%26gt%3B100%20points%29%20rates.%20Ninety-one%20per%20cent%20%2810%5C%2F11%29%20of%20the%20cannabis%20group%20achieved%20a%20clinical%20response%20compared%20to%2040%25%20%284%5C%2F10%29%20of%20the%20placebo%20group%20%28RR%202.27%2C%2095%25%20CI%201.04%20to%204.97%3B%20very%20low%20certainty%20evidence%29.%20More%20AEs%20were%20observed%20in%20the%20cannabis%20cigarette%20group%20compared%20to%20placebo%20%28RR%204.09%2C%2095%25%20CI%201.15%20to%2014.57%3B%20very%20low%20certainty%20evidence%29.%20These%20AEs%20were%20considered%20to%20be%20mild%20in%20nature%20and%20included%20sleepiness%2C%20nausea%2C%20difficulty%20with%20concentration%2C%20memory%20loss%2C%20confusion%20and%20dizziness.%20This%20study%20did%20not%20report%20on%20serious%20AEs%20or%20withdrawal%20due%20to%20AEs.One%20small%20study%20%28N%20%3D%2022%29%20compared%20cannabis%20oil%20%285%25%20cannabidiol%29%20to%20placebo%20oil%20in%20people%20with%20active%20CD.%20This%20study%20was%20rated%20as%20high%20risk%20of%20bias%20for%20other%20bias%20%28cannabis%20participants%20were%20more%20likely%20than%20placebo%20participants%20to%20be%20smokers%29.%20There%20was%20no%20difference%20in%20clinical%20remission%20rates.%20Forty%20per%20cent%20%284%5C%2F10%29%20of%20cannabis%20oil%20participants%20achieved%20remission%20at%208%20weeks%20compared%20to%2033%25%20%283%5C%2F9%29%20of%20the%20placebo%20participants%20%28RR%201.20%2C%2095%25%20CI%200.36%20to%203.97%3B%20very%20low%20certainty%20evidence%29.%20There%20was%20no%20difference%20in%20the%20proportion
