thyme

Thyme

Thyme is a popular culinary herb around the world, it also has many health benefits. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties.   In ancient Rome, thyme was regarded as a protector, it was believed that consuming it could protect a person from being poisoned.  It was used as an incense and burned as sage, in bundles, to purify homes and cast out evil spirits.  Thyme would even be carried by Roman soldiers into battle.  The ancient Egyptians used thyme as an embalming herb and believed that it would help with passage into the next world.  In the Victorian 19th century, bandages were first soaked in a thyme infused water.

Thyme contains thymol, a natural compound with antiseptic properties; actually, it is even used today in mouthwash and other cosmetics.  The flowers, leaves, and oil may be used for their medicinal properties.

Consumed orally, it may be used to sooth sore throats, bronchitis, whooping cough.  Thyme is used to treat colic, arthritis, stomach aches and gastritis.  Studies suggest that it may rid the body of parasitic worms.
