Psyllium Husks

Derived from the husks of the plantago ovata, Psyllium is best known for its use a laxative.  Psyllium has quite a few other benefits as well, particularly for the pancreas and heart. 

Psyllium is a bulk-forming laxative, meaning that it absorbs intestinal liquid.  This results in a softer, viscus-fluid-like stool.  The greatest benefit of bulk-forming laxatives it that they are gradual and lacking side effects inherent to stimulant laxatives. If using psyllium as a bulk laxative, ensure taking the proper dosage, drinking with at least 8oz of water and follow with a second glass of water.  Be mindful that psyllium may be an allergen and consider speaking to a medical professional before using.    

Psyllium is used for reducing cholesterol levels, improving heart health.  As other high-fibre foods, it can reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure, strengthening the heart muscle, and improving lipid levels. 

Evidence suggests that psyllium husks help to balance the glycemic balance.  This involves the relationship between insulin and blood sugar; therefore, psyllium husks may benefit individuals with diabetes. 

Psyllium husks are indicated as a pro-biotic and for weight loss as well.
