An aromatic herb that grows well even in poor soil, originating in the Mediterranean region and areas around Western Asia. Ruta originates from the greek, meaning “to set free”. In ancient times, Rue was used in stew in order to prevent diseases. In Ethiopia, the leaves and seeds are traditionally ground as an addition to coffee.
Ingested, it is known to calm nervousness, encourage good eye health, and relieve pain. It may alleviate the physical symptoms associated with gout, rheumatism, and scatica. Rue helps to reduce gas, colic, and works as a digestive tonic.
It also attracts butterflies.
